or yaw in a corner or lane change maneuver) or a "bad spring" which can
have a remarkable impact on the way your vehicle handles by encouraging
the car to roll.
Furthermore, the weight of the vehicle on the tire
presses the tire into a flat spot where it meets the roadway. This flat
spot on the bottom of the tire is known as the contact
patch. As the edges of the tire get bent so that the
tire's surface gets squished from a round surface to a flat
surface where the tire meets the ground, energy is released in
the form of heat into the tire. This anomaly is very similar
to the way that a paperclip gets hot when you bend it back and
forth. This heat combined with the heat that is generated inside your
tire due to the compression of the air under load, the friction between
the tire and the road, and the absorption of ambient heat from
the atmosphere will have a drastic change on your tire's
mostly rubber structure.
When you consider that your tire experiences all of these
different forces and changes and that the only part of your
vehicle that touches the road is the tires contact patch which
are collectively about the size of the sole of a tennis shoe you can
really begin to appreciate just how vital the tire is in terms
of safe handling. It is the job of the manufacturer
of your automobile to conduct thorough research into determining the
best tire for a chosen application and often rollover accidents are
caused by the manufacturer simply choosing the wrong tire for a
particular vehicle.
